BASIC ENGINE COMPONENTS Although reciprocating internal combustion engines appear quite simple, they are highly complicated machines. Hundreds of components must perform their functions satisfactorily to produce output power. There are two kinds of engines viz., ignition and compression ignition engine. let us now go through the vital engine components and the nomenclature related to an engine. Engine components An exploded engine view is shown in the figure . The main components of the engine and their functions are briefly described below. 1) Cylinder Block: The cylinder block is the main supporting structure for the various components. VALVE TIMING OF 4-STROKE PETROL (SI) AND DIESEL ENGINE (CI) Valve Timing of Petrol Engine (SI) Valve timing is the regulation of the points in the cycle at which the valves are set to open and close. We can easily explain valve open and closing through the valve timing diagram. The exact moment at which the inlet and outlet valve opens and closes with reference to the position of the piston and crank shown diagrammatically is known as the valve timing diagram. It is expressed in terms of degree crank angle. If we consider the ideal cycle, inlet, and exhaust valves open and close at dead centers. But in an actual cycle, they open or close before and after dead centers. Valve timing has to be adjusted according to the speed of the engine. What is an Automobile The word “Automobile” is derived from the Greek word “autos” meaning self and the Latin word “mobile” meaning “movable”. An automobile is a self-propelled vehicle that travels on land. It consists of either an internal combustion engine powered by gasoline, diesel, etc., or alternative means like an electric battery, fuel cell, etc. The primary function of an automobile is to carry people and goods from one place to another. All bikes, cars, trucks, buses, etc. are a few examples included in it. Simply to say, anything that has its own power source and moves on the road is an automobile.
